2011 Keynote Speakers

Shantanu Narayen, President & CEO, Adobe

 

Shantanu Narayen is president and chief executive officer of Adobe, one of the world's largest and most diversified software companies. Narayen's leadership, technology insight and operational expertise have strengthened Adobe's culture of innovation, expanded the company into new markets, and extended its product portfolio and global reach. In 2009, Narayen led the $1.8 billion acquisition of Omniture, Inc., expanding Adobe's ability to help customers measure and optimize the value of online experiences, content and applications.

Prior to his appointment as CEO in December of 2007, Narayen was Adobe's president and COO, responsible for the company's day-to-day global operations, product research and development, marketing and corporate development. In 2005, he co-led the $3.4 billion acquisition of Macromedia, strengthening the company's presence in key markets ranging from enterprises and vertical industries to mobile devices and multimedia publishing. Previously, he held key product research and development positions within Adobe, including executive vice president of worldwide products, senior vice president of worldwide product development and vice president and general manager of the engineering technology group.

Peter Schwartz, Co-founder & Chairman, Global Business Network

 

Peter Schwartz is cofounder and chairman of GBN and a partner of the Monitor Group. An internationally renowned futurist and business strategist, Peter specializes in scenario planning, working with corporations, governments, and institutions to create alternative perspectives of the future and develop robust strategies for a changing and uncertain world. Prior to founding GBN, he served as head of scenario planning at Royal Dutch/Shell and then as director of the Strategic Environment Center at SRI International. Peter is also a venture partner of San Francisco-based Alta Partners, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the board of trustees of the Santa Fe Institute, the Long Now Foundation, and the World Affairs Council.

Peter is the author of Inevitable Surprises, (2003), a provocative look at the dynamic forces at play in the world today and their implications for business and society. His first book, The Art of the Long View,(1991), is considered a seminal publication on scenario planning and was recently voted the No. 1 futures book by the Association of Professional Futurists. He also co-authored The Long Boom, (1999), a vision for the world characterized by global openness, prosperity, and discovery; When Good Companies Do Bad Things, (1999), an examination of and argument for corporate social responsibility; and China's Futures, (2001), which describes very different scenarios for China. He publishes and lectures widely and served as a script consultant on the films "The Minority Report," "Deep Impact," "Sneakers," and "War Games." Peter received a B.S. in aeronautical engineering and astronautics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Steven Chan, President, Suntech America

 

Mr. Steven Chan currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer and President of Suntech America, Inc. He has served their Chief Strategy Office since August 2007. Mr. Chan has been with Suntech since September 2006, and has previously served as President, Global Sales and Marketing and Vice-President, Business Development. As a result of Suntech's re-organization in 2009 to a model with three regional headquarters located in Wuxi, Schaffhausen (outside of Zurich) and San Francisco, and to better serve and focus on the operating needs of each region, Mr. Chan became the head of Suntech's U.S. regional headquarters and President of Suntech America responsible for expanding initiatives in the North and South America regions.

Prior to joining Suntech, Mr. Chan worked at CDC Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed, Greater China-based enterprise software and online/mobile services company, most recently serving as its Acting CEO and previously as its General Counsel and Company Secretary. Prior to that, Mr. Chan was a New York-qualified corporate attorney with Morrison & Forester LLP and Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCoy LLP. Mr. Chan graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and also received a J.D. degree from the Boston College Law School.

Rich K. Lyons is the Dean of the Haas School of Business. He has been on the faculty since 1993. He served as Acting Dean from 2004 to 2005 and as Executive Associate Dean and S.K. and Angela Chan Professor of Global Management. He received his BS with highest honors from U.C. Berkeley (finance) and his PhD from MIT (economics). From 1987 to 1993, Professor Lyons was on the faculty at Columbia Business School. His teaching expertise is in international finance. In 1998, Professor Lyons received U.C. Berkeley's highest teaching honor, the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award.

From 2006 to 2008, Professor Lyons was on leave from Berkeley serving as the Chief Learning Officer at Goldman Sachs in New York. He currently serves as a Trustee for Matthews Asia.



 

Laura Tyson, S.K. and Angela Chan Chair of Global Management, U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business

 

Laura D. Tyson is the current S.K. and Angela Chan Chair of Global Management at the Haas School of Business. She served as the Dean of London Business School from 2002 to 2006, and as Dean of the Haas School from 1998 to 2001.

Dr. Tyson is a member of President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board. She served in the Clinton Administration and was Chair of The Council of Economic Advisors from 1993 to 1995, and the President's National Economic Advisor from 1995 to 1996. She holds a BA from Smith College (economics) and a PhD from MIT (economics). She is an expert in trade and international competitiveness.
